How do I get a full driving licence?

Before you can drive a car, you must be 17 years old and possess a provisional driving licence.

You are permitted to apply for this licence as soon as you are more than 15 years and 9 months old. You can then commence lessons as soon as the provisional licence becomes valid on your 17th birthday.

Don't have a Provisional Driving Licence? Here's how to get yours...

Apply online for a provisional licence

To apply online for a provisional driving licence, click here to go to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) official website.

Before you apply, be sure you have a valid UK passport or another form of identity. You must also provide addresses of where you have lived over the last three years. You will also need to have a working printer connected to your computer.

While applying, you’ll be issued with a Government Gateway user ID.

If you already have a Government Gateway user ID, simply enter it with your password. For your security and protection, and with your consent, the DVLA will carry out checks on your identity. If you have a UK digital passport, DVLA will capture your photograph and signature from the Identity and Passport Service (IPS).

If, at the end of the online application process, it has not been possible for DVLA to verify your identity, retrieve your details from IPS or you do not have a UK digital passport you can still complete the application online. Simply print off your application and mail it to DVLA within 28 days. You will be advised during the transaction of any relevant documentation you will need to send with the printed application.

DVLA will aim to send you a new Provisional Licence within 15 working days.

How to apply by post for a provisional licence

To apply for a provisional licence by post, go to the Post Office, pick up and complete two application forms - a D1 and the new photo licence application form D750. Send these forms to the DVLA at the address given on the forms.

How much will it cost?

The fee for a Provisional Licence is currently £34 when you apply online or £43 when you apply by post.

DVLA will accept payment by Mastercard, Visa, Maestro, Electron, Delta or Solo debit or credit card.

Not yet 17? How about a driving lesson on your birthday?

As I mentioned earlier, although you will need your provisional licence before you can take any driving lessons, you can book driving lessons at any time, even if you're not yet 17.

That means you could be taking your very first driving lesson ... on your 17th birthday! OK, it may not be everyone's cup-of-tea, but it could be yours!
