How Do I Get A Full Driving Licence?

If you're new to driving, you'll likely need driving lessons. You'll also have to pass the Theory Test and the Practical Driving Test. In simple terms, here's what you will need to do to gain a Full GB Driving Licence:

1. Start by obtaining a Provisional Driving Licence

2. Commence driving lessons and apply for a Theory Test

3. Pass your Theory Test

4. Continue driving lessons and apply for a Driving Test

5. Pass your Driving Test

Theory Test

You will be required to pass your Theory Test before you can apply for the Practical Driving Test. The Theory Test comprises two sections - a Multiple Choice Test and a Hazard Perception Test. I usually advise pupils to book a Theory Test after 5 or 6 driving lessons. Issues such as hazards, stopping distances and warning signs make more sense once you’re on the road learning to drive. I teach all aspects of the Highway Code and Hazard Perception as an integral part of driving tuition. Together, we'll ensure you're well prepared to take your Theory Test in good time before you book it.

Practical Driving Test

Your driving test will be conducted by a Driver and Vehicles Standards Agency (DVSA) Driving Examiner who will accompany you for around 40 minutes. I recommend that you take your driving test in the car that you have been using for your driving lessons. That way, you'll be really comfortable with the vehicle and familiar with all the controls.

At the beginning of the test, the examiner will ask you a question about safety of your vehicle. Throughout the test, your examiner will give you clear directions in good time. He or she will be looking for you to drive safely and competently in various road and traffic conditions.

From Monday 04 December 2017, DVSA removed the Turn In The Road and Left Reverse exercises from the Driving Test. Instead, you may be required to pull up on the right (kerb to vehicle offside), reverse two car lengths or so, then rejoin traffic. Alternatively you may be asked to carry out a Parallel Park or Park in a Bay - either by driving in and reversing out, or reversing in and driving out (the examiner will tell you which you have to do). You will also be asked to answer a ‘show me’ safety question while on the move such as how to wash the windscreen while driving. Also included is a 20 minute section of independent driving where your examiner will ask you to follow directions from a Sat Nav or look out for traffic signs to a specific destination. There's no need to be concerned if you forget directions or miss any signs because your examiner will help out by giving directions.

Preparing For Your Driving Test

Good preparation delivers great confidence. By the time your Driving Test arrives, you will be driving to a really good standard. You'll be familiar with junctions, intersections and routes likely to be encountered on the driving test. What’s more, you will be adept at reversing and parking efficiently too. In addition, I’ll also make sure that you have gained plenty of experience of driving independently, especially by Sat Nav.
