Typical Course Syllabus

These are the lessons that learners typically need to become confident drivers and of sufficiently good standard to pass the driving test. The course is entirely flexible to meet each individual pupil's needs.

1 Introduction to Driving Cockpit Drill · How the car works · Controls · Moving Off & Stopping introducing the Mirrors / Signal / Manoeuvre routine
2 Moving Off & Stopping Recap previous lesson · 'Pull-Push' Steering Technique · Driving Modes: 'Creep', 'Hold' and 'Regen' (regenerative braking)
3 Junctions T Junctions & Major Road to Minor Road - introducing the Mirrors / Signal / Position / Speed / Look routine
4 Junctions T Junctions & Major Road to Minor Road - consolidating use of the MSPSL routine
5 Crossroads Including Traffic Light Controlled Junctions (left & straight ahead) plus Pedestrian Crossings
6 Crossroads Including Traffic Light Controlled Junctions (turning right) plus Pedestrian Crossings
7 Meeting traffic Narrow situations · Clearance to parked vehicles, skips, refuse trucks etc. · Anticipating possible and likely actions of other drivers, pedestrians, cyclists.
8 Roundabouts Using the Mirrors / Signal / Position / Speed / Look routine.
9 Roundabouts Consolidating use of the MSPSL routine.
10 Mini Roundabouts Including Complex Intersections.
11 Emergency Stop Pupils frequently achieve this skill quite quickly and a full 2 hour lesson is not always required.
12 Dual Carriageways Including Overtaking and Major Roundabouts
13 Parallel Park Reverse park reasonably close to and parallel with the kerb, taking effective observations throughout the manoeuvre.
14 Park In A Bay Taking effective observations throughout, drive into a parking bay, then reverse out safely. Also reverse into a parking bay, then drive out safely.
15 Pull Up On The Right Pull up on the right-hand side of the road, reverse for 2 car lengths and then, taking effective observations, rejoin the traffic.
16 Sat Nav Practice During the independent driving part of the test, most candidates will be asked to follow directions from a Sat Nav for around 20 minutes.
17 Reversing Exercises Recap each of the Reversing Exercises.
18 Safety Check Q&A 21 possible questions about your vehicle. The examiner will ask a “tell me” question at start of the test and a “show me” question while you are driving.
19 Mock Test Mock Test · Safety Check Q&A (more than one Mock Test may be carried out - depending on outcome of this mock test)
20 Motorway Driving Practice joining and leaving the motorway, overtaking safely and using lanes correctly, understand motorway signage and manage vehicle breakdowns. Motorway driving isn't being introduced to the Driving Test for the time being.
